06 Jun 2014, New York City, New York State, USA --- New York, like most coastal cities, is at risk of catastrophic flooding as sea levels rise. In the wake of hurricane Sandy New York's major is proposing groundbreaking flood defenses to protect the Big Apple from bobbing. Designed by Danish firm BIG the $335 million project would shelter Manhattan island with artificial embankments (berms) flanked with bridges, parks and attractive public spaces for recreation. There would even be an underwater viewing platform to watch the Noah-style waters rise. Salt-tolerant plants would grow across the raised berms and if all goes to plan 'The Big U" could be completed in five years, predicts Mayor Bill de Blasio.
